The DbD Experience is a 32-hour intensive weekend created and taught by interdisciplinary artist Rachel Rosenthal.  Ms. Rosenthal developed the method applied to the DbDX during the 12 years of training people for her Instant Theatre Company active between the 50's and 70's in Los Angeles.  "Doing by Doing" is the underlying philosophy of the workshop, providing participants with a thorough hands-on experience covering all aspects of theatrical performance (body, voice, sound, music, movement, lights, sets and costumes), approached through exercises, processes and improvisations of solos, duets and group work.  The nuts and bolts aspect of the work is technical and professional.  Max. 14 Participants.

The work in the 8–Week Class is both improvisational and structured. We divide the time between exercises, processes and improvised theatre on the one hand, and pieces brought in by the participants as solos or collaborations, conceived outside of class and performed for feedback and development. Students are taught techniques for composing pieces, and are expected to take turns performing, as well as making sets, designing lights, and providing vocal or musical complement to the theatrical event. Voice, text, and language are explored, as well as various styles of performance, both traditional and post-modern. Students use the class to try out ideas and concepts that will be shown in a public performance here at ESPACE DBD at the end of the 8–Week cycle.  Max. 14 participants.  Where - When etc. below.

“PERFORMANCE FROM SCRATCH” – NEW WORKSHOP!

Master acting-improvisation teacher Kate Noonan (Stella Adler Conservatory and Renaissance Arts Academy) teaches a new Saturday workshop for young people.  Running for eight Saturdays beginning June 28th through August 16th, 2008 from 1PM – 5PM, the workshop will be a hands-on exploration of Rosenthal’s “Total Theatre” ideology, encompassing all aspects of performance including improvisation, set making, lights, mask work and costumes and beyond.  Max. 14 Participants.  FEE: $300.

NOTE: "Dog energy is empowering and soothing. Three dogs live in the ESPACE DBD building, and they are welcome to participate in the classes.  They understand theatre discipline, and only rarely choose to perform with us. Whenever they do, however, they challenge our concentration, and if we are improvising, force us to deal with the  circumstance.  All well and good.  But if you are allergic, please consider that we are not able to get rid of every dog hair!"

FEE: $200 deposit required to reserve space, is applied toward full workshop fee of $500(8-WEEK & DBD)/$300(P.F.S.), which is due no later than first day of class.  Payable by VISA/MASTERCARD/AMEX or Ca$h/Check/Money Order.
